15 School Days of Christmas: The K-pop playlist for Christmas
Everyone knows the Christmas classics. “Santa Baby,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” and “All I Want for Christmas is You” are just a few popular Christmas songs.
While these songs are widely loved by many and are played endlessly until the holiday season ends, sometimes a change to something different is in order.
K-pop, or Korean pop music, has been growing in popularity for several years, but recently its growth has increased dramatically with popular bands catering more to overseas audiences.
Luckily for those seeking holiday spirit, K-pop is no stranger to the Christmas season and holiday music.
Many of Korea’s most notable artists have had a Christmas album or single of some sort. EXO, Twice, Girls’ Generation, SHINee, and Monsta X are just a few who have contributed to the holiday music of Korea.
There are some songs that are spin-offs of Western holiday songs, while others are original.
If someone is looking for classic Christmas songs, “Last Christmas” by BoA and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Wendy are excellent English covers by some popular female K-pop artists.
Girl’s Generation also did a Christmas special featuring the classic songs “Santa Baby” and “All I Want for Christmas is You.” They are very popular in Korea and their vocals fit the songs well.
The boy bands BTOB and SHINee also covered some classic holiday songs. BTOB did a unique cover of “White Christmas” and “Deck the Halls” in an acapella style while SHINee, a renowned band in Korea, did a classic boppy cover of “Last Christmas.”
For listeners looking for a more original playlist of K-pop Christmas songs, there are many by different artists.
Monsta X’s “Lonely Christmas” is an all-Korean song about a Christmas spent alone. It’s a bit different compared to the some of the band’s other electronic style pop songs.
Twice, arguably one of the most popular Korean girl groups of 2018, also has an original song, “Merry and Happy,” which is about a new Christmas that no longer makes them feel lonely. It’s an upbeat song that will give anyone holiday spirit.
NCT Dream’s song “Joy” brings together a mixture of Christmas classics along with Korean lyrics, which makes for a fun, diverse song.
EXO even released a Christmas album titled Miracles in December, which includes six winter-themed tracks.
