Windbreakers making a comeback

Chris Boyd, Staff Writer

The revival of windbreakers is imminent and clothing brands are jumping on the bandwagon.

A windbreaker or a windcheater is a thin coat designed to resist wind chill and light rain — a lighter version of a jacket. It is usually lightweight, and these days typically made of some type of synthetic material.

Windbreakers last were popular in the ‘90s and 2000s. But now brands such as Adidas, Rip N Dip, and Odd Future are bringing the windbreaker back, and using it to increase brand growth.

Famous celebrities have been using windbreakers along with their merchandise as a marketing scheme to attract buyers from all over the country. Big Sean, Travis Scott, and Migos are examples of music acts that have started selling windbreakers as part of their tour merchandise.

As a popular clothing article, windbreakers are typically more expensive compared to other jackets or hoodies. Name-brand windbreakers can sell anywhere from $60 to $80. Some can be even more expensive; the Travis Scott tour windbreakers cost $100.

The windbreaker first became popular as an item of informal outerwear in the 1970s. The purpose of the windbreaker is to combat rain, wind, and general weather.

The jacket when it was first released was only released for men and young boys. Now the jacket is available to men and women of all ages.
