Students who participate in extracurricular activities now face the same academic eligibility requirements that cover athletes. This is policy is fair, although enforcement could be challenging.
Under the new policy, grades will be reviewed every week, and students in extracurricular activities will have to be passing at least four full-credit courses, which includes year-long electives, to be eligible.
Additionally, students who fail to maintain a 2.0 grade point average and passing grades in English, math, social studies, and science will be placed on probation, although they will still be eligible. Students on probation who do not make adequate progress academically, however, eventually can be ruled ineligible.
The new regulations are impartial and sensible. Everyone should be held to the same standards, no matter if someone is in the Latin Club or the lacrosse team.
They will be challenging for administrators to enforce, however. With nearly 1,500 students to look monitor, school leaders will be busy trying to determine who is on academic probation and who is not. The new rules will put extra pressure not just on students, but also club sponsors and administrators.
