CD reviews: Melanie Martinez

BY ANDIE HENDERSON
5 stars

Melanie Martinez’s debut album, Cry Baby, has a sound similar to Lana Del Rey. Martinez got her start when she was on The Voice, and although she did not win, she got the recognition she deserved. Even though her songs such as “Sippy Cup” and “Milk and Cookies” make it seem family friendly, it is not. Her songs tell stories of emotional abuse and broken promises with a harsh tone. Despite having a catchy beat, “Dollhouse” tells the story of an abusive family and how people don’t know what’s going on behind the curtains. “Pity Party” is by far the best song off the album. It has catchy lyrics and an upbeat sound, making it the perfect song to sing along to with friends. While she obviously is influenced by today’s basic pop artists, Martinez is able to maintain her own original tone.
