Movie review: “The Man from U.N.C.L.E”

BY ALEX BARTMAN
Staff Writer

The much anticipated spy film The Man from U.N.C.L.E takes a page from the 1960’s TV show and adds a layer of cool with director Guy Ritchie directing and writing. Viewers follow CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB operative Ilya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) in an East meets West operation to take down a mysterious criminal organization, which is planning to proliferate nuclear arms. Composer Daniel Pemberton’s score fits snug around the ‘60s-set spy tale like a well-tailored suit, with elements of 60’s spy films, spaghetti westerns, and early ‘60s international (largely Italian) pop. The film’s slick style provides for a cultivated mix of humor, action, ambition, wit, culture, and cool that feels refreshingly analog in a digital world. Aside from the characters coming off serious compared to the show, The Man from U.N.C.L.E provides a balance of the spy world and the cultures present in the film.
