Junior Braden Yokopenic, the first Baldwin player in years to qualify for WPIAL boys tennis singles finals, lost 10-0 to North Allegheny’s Trey Davidson on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, Yokopenic feels he played his best and gained experience for future matches.

“Even though the score doesn’t reflect it, I can compete with some of the best in WPIALs,” Yokopenic said.

Yokopenic has taken some time to reflect on his tennis journey to WPIALs, and continues to practice for upcoming matches. Yokopenic trains at Glen Creek Tennis Club year-round to sharpen and learn new skills.

“I attribute my success to parents and coaches, because without all of them I would not be the player I am today,” Yokopenic said.

Principal Shaun Tomaszewski attended the match to cheer Yokopenic on.

“Showing up and seeing kids do the things that they love is something that I truly enjoy,” Tomaszewski said.

Tomaszewski said he recognizes Yokopenic’s talent on the court.

“When I’m watching someone like Braden compete on the tennis court, I see his passion for and his love of the game,” Tomaszewski said.

Yokopenic is hopeful for the rest of the regular season, and already is looking forward to his chances in the WPIAL tournament next year.

“It was really fun to play at WPIALs even though I did not win,” Yokopenic said, “I’m looking forward to helping the rest of my team to get better.”
