The Baldwin girls varsity gymnastics team placed fifth at WPIAL team competition on Friday night.

Freshman Ashley Brown said the team did particularly well on the beam and vault routine.

“It was a pretty good meet for us,” Brown said.

In the silver division individuals, junior Abbey Herrle placed fifth on bars and fifth all around. Junior Emily Schwab placed sixth on beam.

In the gold division individuals, Brown placed ninth on vault.

Due to the pandemic, the competition was run differently.

“I have never competed at it before, but from what I’ve heard from coaches and my other friends, the competition used to be a full-day event. This year, once you finished competing you had to leave,” Brown said.

The team didn’t do as well compared to the previous year, but most of the team were still happy with how they performed.

“We could have performed cleaner,” Brown said. “Overall I think we did well. I know I personally was happy with how I did.”

Next up for the Highlanders will be states, which will be held this weekend.
