Young starters serve big role

With hard work and the emergence of young talent, the girls volleyball team has had a good season. With a record of 8-5 as of early October, the girls needed to win their next three games in order to make the playoffs.

The team credits the turning point in their season to their win against Montour.

“We beat them in three games,” Coach Adam Foote said. “It was a real confidence builder for the girls.”

Also, Foote attributes the team’s success to their preparation for the season.

“The girls have done a tremendous amount of work in the off-season and came together as a team,” Foote said.

One player in particular who demonstrated this work ethic was freshman and starting varsity player Madison Sgattoni. She has been playing volleyball as a club sport since fourth grade.

“She is comfortable on the court and naturally gifted in the sport,” Foote said.

Joining Sgattoni as the other outside hitter is sophomore, Mackenzie Voelker. Despite being underclassman, they both work well with the team.

“We all get along really well and are like a family,” Sgattoni said.

However, it is very uncommon for the two outside hitters to be a sophomore and a freshman, Foote said.

Even with the addition of these standout players and the team’s motivation, they have suffered a few disappointing defeats.

The second time they played West Allegheny, it was a bitter loss, Foote said.

“They had been playing very well in previous games, and they should have won that match,” Foote said.

Yet some of the losses served as motivation to the team. In its game against Bethel, the team showcased how well they could all work together.

“We had so much energy and everyone had each other’s back,” Sgattoni said. “Bethel is the best in our section, and we definitely have a chance of beating them next time we play them.”

The girls have shown great improvement this year. After having a rough season last year, the girls trained hard in attempt to make the playoffs.

“I hope we can make the playoffs because it will be really sad to see all the seniors go,” Sgattoni said.
