Hallmark Christmas movies have certainly earned their growing popularity, but not necessarily thanks to the plots or acting.

It seems like each movie follows a formula: a woman who is a high-powered executive in a big city finds herself in a small town for Christmas, and ends up finding not only Christmas spirit, but also love.

The differences are just enough to make each movie distinct. Some movies feature the lead couple trapped in a cabin during a snowstorm, while others focus on two people who dislike each other at first, but find love when they’re forced to make a gingerbread house together.

The acting is equally repetitive. Many actors star in multiple movies, and their acting doesn’t change much for each character they play.

As they gain popularity, Hallmark is expanding its collection of Christmas movies. This year, there is a premiere of a new movie every Saturday and Sunday until Christmas.

These movies, while repetitive, are incredibly fun to watch, especially with a group. Pointing out the repetitive plot or acting is especially enjoyable during a marathon, and jokingly trying to connect all the movies with the same lead actor is entertaining.

Even outside of watching with a group, the movies are full of warmth and Christmas cheer that are sure to put anyone in the Christmas mood.

The ever-present Christmas music, touching family moments, and small-town charm make the movies enjoyable, no matter how repetitive they are.

However, the movies are lacking in diversity. Hallmark has only now announced their intent to make Hanukkah movies, and nearly all of the leads are white.

No one, though, watches Hallmark movies for their diversity and representation. The movies provide everyone with an equal opportunity to enjoy them — ironically or not.

Overall, Hallmark Christmas movies aren’t the highest quality, but they’re plenty of fun to watch for anyone who has too much free time around Christmas.
