Because last year’s musical, Big Fish, won Best Musical at the 2016 Gene Kelly Awards, sophomore Morgan Traud had faith in the chance of success for this year’s musical, Zorro.

“During rehearsal, we thought about it,” said Traud, who was the female lead in Zorro. “We didn’t do it solely for the awards, but we thought (Zorro) would be good enough to make it.”

It was indeed, as Zorro was named Best Musical on Saturday night at this year’s Gene Kelly Awards. Baldwin also won for Best Execution of Music Direction and Best Execution of Direction.

Senior Nick Cortazzo was alone at the time Zorro won Best Musical. He was changing out of costume from the actor medley performance when the award was announced.

“I was so excited I was screaming, and all the other nominated actors were congratulating me,” he said.

While most members of the cast hoped for a Gene Kelly award, senior Jake Mysliwczyk said he had no doubt about Zorro’s chance for success.

“I knew we were going to win best musical,” Mysliwczyk said. “It was a relief when we did.”

Mysliwczyk said Baldwin’s unique choice of musicals in recent years has added to the school’s success.

“Between Big Fish last year, Zorro, and also Drowsy Chaperon, Baldwin is really unique,” Mysliwczyk said.

Overall, cast members agreed that it was an experience to remember, and that they don’t take their success for granted.

“It was a really nice final bow. It’s going to leave a lasting impression,” Cortazzo said.
